From Calls to Courtship: Discover Fascinating Mating Behaviors of Animals Found at Moody Gardens

January 21, 2026

When it comes to romance, humans don't have the monopoly on grand gestures and devoted partnerships. From elaborate courtship dances to years-long parental teamwork, the animals at Moody Gardens showcase some of nature's most fascinating love stories.

The Dancers and Singers

Penguins: Masters of Courtship

Our penguin colony knows that the way to win a heart is through thoughtful gifts and sweet serenades. Gentoo penguins are the romantics of the bunch; the male will carefully select the perfect pebble to present to prospective mates, proving they can provide an excellent nesting spot. It's the avian equivalent of house-hunting together on the first date!

King penguins take a different approach, with both males and females strutting their stuff and standing tall to show off their best features.

Meanwhile, Macaroni, Rockhopper, and Chinstrap penguins are the musicians of the family, singing to their mates throughout breeding season. They even serenade their chicks while they're still in the eggs—talk about starting the bond early!

Partners for Life

Angelfish: Together Forever

Some love stories are meant to last a lifetime!

Our angelfish are known for forming long term pair bonds, often choosing a single partner and staying together over time. Once bonded, pairs can be seen swimming closely side by side, coordinating their movements and sharing territory. This partnership is especially important during breeding, when both fish play active roles in protecting eggs and caring for their young. Their strong bond and teamwork make angelfish a standout example of cooperation and commitment in the aquatic world.

Cockatoos and Macaws: Feathered Soulmates

In the Rainforest Pyramid, cockatoos demonstrate that strong partnerships often begin with eye-catching courtship. Males attract females through a mix of movement, sound, and visual displays, raising their crests, spreading their wings, and calling out while bobbing or hopping.

Some species even perform rhythmic drumming on trees to stand out from the crowd. Once paired, cockatoos often form long term bonds and work together as attentive parents, sharing the responsibility of feeding and protecting their chicks.

Macaws take courtship seriously too, with pair bonding that can span several seasons. Their relationships involve feeding each other (the ultimate sign of trust), synchronized flights, and elaborate displays.

While not all macaw species mate for life, many show strong favoritism and deep bonds with their chosen partners.

Eurasian Eagle Owls: Loyal Homebodies

These majestic birds of prey are the ultimate homebodies, returning to the same nesting sites year after year with their monogamous partners.

The male takes his provider role seriously, bringing food to his mate while she incubates their eggs and defending their territory from intruders.

Seriemas: Power Couples

Talk about teamwork! Seriema pairs are monogamous partners who do everything together.

Males woo females with attentive displays, food offerings, and loud duets that establish their shared territory. Together, they build massive nests—some up to 10 feet wide! Both parents share incubation duties and feed their young, staying together as a family unit while teaching their fledglings essential hunting skills.

Unexpected Romances

Clownfish: Love Transcends All

Perhaps one of the most unique love stories in our Aquarium belongs to the clownfish.

All clownfish are born male, but when they reach breeding size, the most dominant fish transforms into a female. These fish form monogamous relationships, but if tragedy strikes and the female passes away, the male undergoes an incredible transformation—becoming female and seeking out a new male partner. It's a beautiful reminder that love adapts and endures.

Tarantulas: High-Stakes Romance

Not all love stories are easy! For our tarantulas, courtship is literally a high-stakes game.

Male tarantulas perform an elaborate ritual, spinning a small web, depositing sperm, and then drumming to create vibrations that attract females. The delicate dance of inserting his pedipalps to deposit sperm requires precision and speed—because if he's not quick enough, he might become his mate's next meal! Once fertilized, females transform into fierce protectors, guarding their egg sacs containing hundreds to thousands of future spiderlings.

Devoted Parents

Kinkajous: Super Moms

While kinkajous may have multiple partners (they're polygynandrous), the mothers are incredibly devoted to their offspring.

Females time their breeding to coincide with peak fruit availability, ensuring they'll have enough energy for the demanding months ahead. Once born, pups are entirely dependent on their mothers, who provide extensive care and nurse them for up to eight months.

Tamanduas: Piggyback Parenting

Tamandua mothers prove that you don't need a partner to be an amazing parent.

After a brief mating encounter, females carry the full responsibility of raising their single pup... and quite literally! Mothers carry their babies on their backs for months, sometimes up to a year, using their prehensile tails to navigate the rainforest canopy while keeping their little ones safe.

The Unexpected Caregivers

Prehensile-Tailed Skinks: Reptilian Role Models

In the reptile world, parental care is rare, but our prehensile-tailed skinks are exceptional.

Both parents care for their young together, which is almost unheard of among reptiles. They invest so much time and energy into each family that they sometimes breed only every other year!

Madagascar Hissing Roaches: Nurturing Moms

Even insects can show maternal love! Take the Madagascar hissing roaches for instance.

Female Madagascar hissing roaches don't just give live birth to 20–40 nymphs, they also produce a special defensive secretion that provides vital nutrients to their babies in those crucial first days of life.

The Solitary Romantics

Not every species needs a long-term relationship to show impressive mating behaviors.

White's tree frogs wait for the perfect rainy, humid conditions before males begin their chorus of "wock" sounds to attract females. Males even develop special rough pads on their thumbs specifically for gripping females during their mating embrace.
